Flash floods in Dallas–Fort Worth

Flash floods like August 2022 can put water into DFW homes in hours. Steps to take after floodwater gets in, and a referral to independent help.

Referral service · Not a contractor

Heavy rain over clay soil and pavement runs off fast. On August 21–22, 2022, DFW Airport recorded 9.19 inches of rain in 24 hours, the second-highest 24-hour total on record there, and the governor declared a disaster for 23 counties, including Tarrant (City of Fort Worth). Homes near creeks and low streets took on water.

After floodwater gets in

  1. Do not enter if water is near electrical panels or outlets, or if there is a gas smell.
  2. Turn around, don't drown: never drive or walk through flooded roads.
  3. Treat outside floodwater as contaminated. Wear gloves and boots.
  4. Photograph and video everything before cleanup.
  5. Call your insurer; standard homeowners policies usually exclude outside flooding, which is covered by separate flood insurance.
  6. Ask a restoration contractor about wet drywall, insulation, and flooring, which often cannot be saved after floodwater.

How our referral works

We are a referral service, not a contractor. When you send a request, we connect you with an independent restoration contractor who serves your city. You contract with and pay that contractor directly, and you are always welcome to choose someone else.
