Safety first: if there is a gas smell, sparking, or a sagging ceiling, leave the area and call 911 or your utility before anything else.
What to do right now
- Stop the water. Close the fixture valve or the home's main shut-off. In many North Texas homes it is in a box near the curb by the meter, at a hose bib, or in the garage.
- Make it safe. Stay out of standing water near outlets and appliances.
- Document. Photograph and video the source and every wet room before moving anything.
- Call your insurer to ask about their claim process.
- Start drying. Move rugs, furniture, and electronics out of wet areas.
- Get the right help. A licensed plumber fixes the source; a restoration contractor measures moisture and dries walls and floors.
How our referral works
We are a referral service, not a contractor. When you send a request, we connect you with an independent restoration contractor who serves your city. You contract with and pay that contractor directly, and you are always welcome to choose someone else.
Why North Texas homes get water damage
DFW weather swings from hard freezes to hail storms to sudden downpours, and much of the Metroplex sits on expansive clay soil that shrinks in drought and swells when wet. That movement can stress slab foundations and the pipes under them.
In February 2021, Winter Storm Uri dropped DFW Airport to −2°F on February 16 and kept it at or below freezing for 139 straight hours, according to the National Weather Service. Pipes burst in homes across the region. In August 2022, DFW Airport recorded 9.19 inches of rain in 24 hours, the second-highest total on record there, and the state declared a disaster for 23 counties (City of Fort Worth).
